Why bad things happen and what must we do when we face them?

Nowadays, a lot of circumstances happening not only in our personal life but around the world as well sometimes leave us wondering, “what is happening?” “Why is this happening?” These situations also dampen our faith in God and we begin to ask, “God, are you real?”

On May 23, 2017, at 11:00 pm, President Rodrigo Duterte declared martial law over Mindanao due to an attack made by a terrorist group headed by the Maute brothers. Marawi City is still a hot spot up since then.

In London, at least 79 people have died from the Grenfell Tower inferno on June 14, 2017. Although it was no act of terrorism and London police have identified its cause, the families of those who have died will recount the tragic incident for as long as they live.

The two incidents above, among other situations in other parts of the world, they happened for a reason. Things happen for a reason. What is more unfortunate than the actual incident is when we don’t realize what was that very reason why it happened in the first place.

God is a good God and only good things can come from a good God. The enemy is bad and bad things do come from him. The enemy is the prince of this world (John 14:30) and he comes to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). He loves attacking God’s children and it started when Adam chose to partake of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

But we have the confidence that whatever the enemy throws at us, we have already won and we are already victorious because of what Jesus did on the cross! Trials and tribulations will come our way but the good news is, God works through them (James 1:1-13). We are not alone in our battles!

Personally, I believe, when things are not going our way, it’s the time for us to get down on our knees and seek God’s face more. He has so much love for us that He wants us to experience but only until we get to know Him, we will come to realize this unconditional love.
